Acronym. Universal Time Coordinated.

A worldwide, agreed-upon time which is identical to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and does not honor Daylight Saving or any other adjustments year round. Often used by computer systems to represent the current time, and the local time is then translated by a series of complex rules, typically related to politics of the region where the computer is located.

For example:

  • The state of Arizona, USA does not honor Daylight Saving
  • Parts of the state of Indiana, USA do not honor Daylight Saving
  • The US Government moved the date by which Daylight Saving began and ended in 2006
