A Redirect is when a Web Server sends a response to a Web Browser which causes the Web Browser to automatically load a new page.
The new Page can be on the same domain name or another one.
Redirects are often used by marketing and advertising services to track clicks on links.
In fact, the entire URL Shortening business is about tracking Redirects.
