Internet Protocols

A computer Protocol is an agreed upon method in which two computers can communicate with each other.

Internet Protocols are a set of standards by which computers can communicate together over the Internet. The development of standard Protocols has led to the massive growth of the internet since the mid-1990s.

The most common Internet Protocols are:

• Hypertext Transport Protocol
• Hypertext Transport Protocol Secure
• File Tranfer Protocol
• Simple Mail Transport Protocol
• Post Office Protocol

The portion of a URL before the colon (":") is an abbreviation for the protocol used to communicate with another computer.
